CSR standards and guidelines

At the turn of this century, corporations began coming together to write and develop voluntary codes of conduct, guidelines and frameworks in response to anti-corporate activism and civil society movements. Out of these efforts came global initiatives such as the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the Global Reporting Initiatives (GRI) and the development ISO 26000 – Social Responsibility standards for CSR.

These are globally established frameworks that corporations adopt in transforming their business model and operations through CSR.

UNGC, GRI, ISO 26000 – how are they linked?
Simply put,

  • UNGC are guiding principles for businesses in the way they operate. There are a total of 10 principles under the compact, covering the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption. Learn more on the UNGC.
  • The ISO 26000 – Social Responsibility standards is a guidance system to help companies in their CSR implementation. Learn about ISO 26000
  • GRI is a reporting framework used by businesses to communicate their CSR initiatives and actions. Learn more about GRI

These frameworks complement each other and are highly comprehensive as they cover a wide range of economic, social and environmental issues and indicators. In addition, the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, endorsed by the UN in 2011, spells out the standards to prevent and address the adverse impact that business activities can have on human rights.

Singapore Compact
