- A CSR forum was organised to launch the National
Tripartite Initiative (NTI) on 26 May 2004 with support from national
and tripartite leaders in Singapore. A distinct roadmap has since been
paved to promote CSR in Singapore with involvement and support from key
national bodies and stakeholders.
- The Initiative was represented at the ISO Conference
on CSR in Stockholm in June 2004. As a follow up, the Initiative would
chair the national ISO mirror committee established to provide inputs
in co-producing the proposed ISO international guidelines on social
responsibility.
- Secretariat of the Initiative conducted a study
visit to the United Kingdom (UK) pertaining to the CSR issues and
implementation led by Mr Lim Boon Heng, Minister in the Prime
Minister’s Office and NTUC Secretary-General in June 2004.
- Ongoing contacts with the International Business
Leaders Forum (IBLF) from the United Kingdom (UK) have been established
with meeting held in exploring possible collaboration.
- Ms Claire Chiang, Co-chair/NTI, delivered a keynote
address at the Association of Corporate Travel Executive regional
conference in Singapore entitled ‘Can Social Conscience Exist Within a
Globalisation Context’ (August 2004).
- The Singapore Compact for CSR was launched as a
national society in bringing the CSR movement forward with Ms Claire
Chiang as the President and Mr Thomas Thomas as the Honorary Secretary.
The multi-stakeholder platform serves to broaden the base for
collaboration between stakeholders and to share positive experiences in
developing effective strategies (26 Jan 05).
- SPRING Singapore invited leaders from the
Initiative/Singapore Compact to represent Singapore in the Asian
Productivity Organisation (APO) Top Management Forum on CSR (Feb/Mar
2005, Japan) and the 1 st ISO Working Group Meeting on Social
Responsibility (March 2005, Brazil).
- A tripartite delegation comprised of representatives
from the MOM, SBF, SNEF and NTUC met with the United Nations
Development Programme (UNDP) in exploring possible CSR initiatives and
possible implementation ahead (Sep 2004).
- The annual Tripartite Industrial Relations (IR)
Seminar was held to incorporate CSR as a sub-discussion topic under the
seminar theme of "Enhancing Employment Flexibility & Social
Responsibility", in raising further awareness and gathering feedbacks
(December 2004).
- Ongoing contacts discussions have been made with the
United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) HQ/New York in finalising the
launch of a Global Compact country network in Singapore by 2005, to
strengthen corporate participation and initiatives.
- Be genuine in your efforts - Communication is a
powerful tool. If you are authentic in your CSR efforts and in how you
communicate them, your initiatives can become a competitive advantage.
- Internal assessment - Be open in examining your
company’s current policies and practices. Becoming aware of your
strengths and weaknesses is the first step in developing a CSR
communication strategy.
- Identify your message - Assess which of your present
efforts will draw the most stakeholder interest and loyalty, in
considering the appropriate value, mission statement and practical
implementation. Always make your message simple, specific, and timely.
- Solicit internal support - While making sure that all
employees are aware of the company’s initiatives, it will be critical
to have senior management support in delivering a consistent approach.
- Know your target market - While it is important to
communicate broadly with all your stakeholders, it is crucial to
identify key CSR issues or targeted segment, in conveying strong and
consistent message
- Develop clear expectations - What do you imagine the
results of your communications to be? CSR profile and reputation
require long term development and commitment.
